The great sperm whale descends, its departure marking a brief respite on the ocean's surface. Years later, remnants of this underwater skirmish reemerge. Fragments of ambergris, once expelled by the whale and smoothed by the ocean's brine, find their way to the shore. To some, it may seem like mere detritus, but to a perfumer, it is a coveted prize.
